Climate-tech startup Sustainable LAB and Gangneung-based local brand POIPU SURF announced on the 16th that they are producing eco-friendly goods made from upcycled coffee grounds converted into bio-based materials. Coffee grounds are the byproducts (residues) left after brewing coffee. Sustainable LAB, which operates the eco-lifestyle brand Idden, and POIPU SURF have launched a coffee grounds goods campaign using Bio-CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) technology that transforms waste resources into carbon-storing materials. Sustainable LAB converts coffee grounds into a bio-material called “Terrafin,” capable of storing approximately 0.949 kg of carbon per 1 kg of material. The material is then used to create travel amenity kits, cups, trays, and other lifestyle goods. The products intentionally feature no printed slogans or logos, conveying their environmental message through simplicity and purpose. Based on its deep roots in Gangneung’s surfing and travel culture, POIPU SURF has curated seasonal menus and exhibition content within its store, incorporating the new Terrafin-based goods. This collaboration is part of a regional initiative to address the surge of waste generated during the summer tourist season. Coastal cities like Gangneung face a sharp increase in single-use products, take-out cups, and coffee waste each year due to the influx of visitors. POIPU SURF CEO Daejin Kwon stated,“Consumption at tourist destinations is fleeting, but the memories last long. We wanted travelers to experience firsthand that even one small item in their hand can help reduce waste and store carbon in this city.” Sustainable LAB provides eco-friendly product development and plastic-to-bio material transition solutions for corporate ESG managers, local governments, and public institutions. The company was recently selected for the ‘2025 Forest Startup Seed Support Program,’ organized by the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute under the Korea Forest Service and operated by Tap & Angel Partners. Building on this collaboration, Sustainable LAB plans to establish partnerships with local coffee districts, hotels, and regional brands to expand the verification and public procurement of carbon-storing goods, promoting scalable models of regional circular sustainability. “Discarded Coffee Grounds → Carbon-Storing Innovative Material: Sustainable LAB Collaborates in Gangneung,” Unicorn Factory, Sept 16, 2025.
